Spikeball vs smash ball vs spyderball vs slam ball vs slammo
In this post, I will be explaining the difference between spikeball vs smash ball vs spyderball vs slam ball vs slammo. That’s a huge comparison. Or maybe there is less comparing than you might think, I’ll explain. But let’s start with a quick overview.
Set | Price | Quality | Durability | Balls | Pump | Score | Where to buy |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Spikeball | $$$ | 4/5 | 4/5 | 1 | No | 4/5 | AmazonSpikeball |
Spikeball pro | $$$$ | 5/5 | 5/5 | 2 | Yes | 4.5/5 | AmazonSpikeball |
Slammo | $$ | 3/5 | 2.5/5 | 3 | Yes | 3/5 | Amazon |
Slammo pro | $$$ | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 3 | Yes | 4/5 | Amazon |
Smash ball | $$ | 3/5 | 2.5/5 | 3 | Yes | 3/5 | Amazon |
Spyderball | $$ | 3/5 | 2.5/5 | 3 | Yes | 3/5 | Amazon |
Slam ball | $$ | 3/5 | 2.5/5 | 3 | Yes | 3/5 | Amazon |
Let’s start with stating that spikeball was invented in 2007 (the company was launched in 2008) and is the original game. All other variants are based on spikeball.
Many knock-offs have been made since then. However, don’t be fooled by misleading information on the internet. Most knock-off brands are using the exact same manufacturer and branding the product in their own way. Meaning that most knock-offs (I will use the term “knock-off” and “spikeball variant” for the same thing) are exactly or almost the same product. The biggest difference is between spikeball and all the knock-offs.
However, sometimes there are also different versions of a spikeball variant. For example, slammo also has a slammo pro version. This makes the comparison a bit more complex.
All sets come with a drawstring bag.
All spikeball variants come with a pump, 2 regular balls and 1 training ball.
Let’s take a deeper look at the comparison.
Should you buy spikeball, smash ball, spyderball, slam ball or slammo
Let’s start by answering the question that most of you probably came here for: should you buy spikeball or any of the spikeball knock-offs?
Well, in most cases, I would definitely recommend buying a real spikeball set. It is actually worth the additional money. Usually the price difference isn’t huge if you go with the standard set.
Let’s figure out exactly what set you need by answering a couple of questions.
Do you intend to play often and take the game serious?
- No question about it, you should go buy the spikeball pro set
Do you want to try out the game but you don’t want to end up with a low quality product?
- You can either go for the regular spikeball set or for the slammo pro (if you go with slammo pro, I would recommend buying spikeball pro balls, because the slammo balls aren’t that good).
Do you want to go budget-friendly? Is the game meant for people who won’t take it too seriously?
- In this case, you can simply go for the cheapest option. It doesn’t really matter if it is slammo, smash ball, spyderball or slam ball.
The original spikeball vs a spikeball variant
Since slammo, slam ball, spyderball, smash ball and most other spikeball variants are almost identical, I will refer to these as “spikeball variants”.
Let’s start with the most important points.
- Spikeball is the original game.
- Spikeball is the most expensive.
- Spikeball has the highest quality.
- Slammo, slam ball, spyderball, smash ball and most other spikeball variants are almost identical and are made by the same manufacturer.
- Spikeball variants are cheaper but have lower quality.
These are really the most important facts to know when learning about spikeball vs smash ball vs spyderball vs slam ball vs slammo and the other spikeball variants.
New brands are popping up out of nowhere on a frequent basis, but as far as I know these are best-known knock-offs. Some of the lesser known spikeball knock-offs have a different design/manufacturer, like the Jogenmax Spike Game Set or Blingo ball.
The key differences between spikeball and the others
We concluded that spikeball is higher quality than the spikeball variants, but it’s also a bit more expensive.
However, if we want to do a proper comparison, we will have to go a step further and really analyze what is meant with a difference in quality.
Durability – Durability is part of the quality. This refers to the sturdiness of the product. If you run into the spikeball set, you don’t want it to be broken. Also, the lower quality sets can get deformed and damaged by the heat of the sun on a sunny day. Small damages while you are setting up the set also occur from time to time.
Ease of use – It should be easy to set up the set, but it should also be easy to store it. Also, the original spikeball set has adjustable legs, which makes it easier to use on uneven terrain. Spikeball variants usually have fixed legs, making it less easy to use.
Gameplay – The higher quality sets have been tested to make gameplay optimal. This means that the size of the ring and the material of the net are optimized to make gameplay as good as possible. Also, if you want the game to be exactly like how the pro’s play it, the original spikeball pro should be used.
Ok, now that you know the general differences. Let’s compare spikeball specifically against each variant. Yes, most of these variants are pretty similar, some sets are even identical. However, there are still some differences.
Spikeball vs spikeball Pro
Comparing the regular spikeball set to the spikeball pro set isn’t really the intention of this article. However, in order to make a complete comparison, I did want to quickly go over the differences.
The size of the standard spikeball set is identical to that of the spikeball pro set (36″).
The net of the spikeball pro set is different from the standard spikeball set. It’s more durable and gives the ball a slightly different way of bouncing. For advanced players, this is preferred.
The included balls are also different. They have the same size, but a different exterior, which gives the spikeball pro balls more control.
Generally, I suggest the spikeball pro set. It is worth the extra money if you intend to play it relatively often. If you want to save some money, you still can’t go wrong with the standard set.
You can find both the standard spikeball set and the spikeball pro set on amazon.
You can also buy bot spikeball sets on their official website.
Spikeball vs slammo
When it comes to spikeball vs slammo, slammo is cheaper, but less durable, has worse gameplay and isn’t as easy to use.
However, just like spikeball, slammo does have a pro version, which is a lot better than the regular one.
The durability and overall quality of the slammo pro set is actually better than the standard spikeball set. Normally, the slammo pro set would still be less expensive than the standard spikeball set. Meaning that slammo pro is actually a better alternative than the regular spikeball set.
However, one important detail, the slammo balls are not high quality. So, if you would end up going with slammo pro, I would highly recommend buying spikeball pro balls. In this case, you will probably end up spending more on slammo pro than on the regular spikeball set.
That said, spikeball pro still outperforms slammo pro.
Spikeball vs spyderball
When it comes to spikeball vs spyderball, spyderball is cheaper, but less durable, has worse gameplay and isn’t as easy to use.
Spyderball is slightly different from the other spikeball variants, but it’s still very similar. The overall build quality and durability are exactly the same as slammo, slam ball, smash ball, etc.
The only difference is that there is a slight change in how you attach the net to the frame. You don’t only attach it to the frame, you also attach it to the legs. The difference is small and doesn’t matter that much, but it doesn’t seem to add any value either.
I did, however, hear a lot of players complain about delivery problems. Which is why I would actually recommend going with another spikeball variant. Unless of course this one ends up being way cheaper than the alternatives.
Spikeball vs slam ball
When it comes to spikeball vs slam ball, slam ball is cheaper, but less durable, has worse gameplay and isn’t as easy to use.
Slam ball is exactly the same as the other spikeball variants/spikeball knock-offs.
The overall quality is lower, but it is a quite a bit cheaper than the spikeball set.
Spikeball vs smash ball
When it comes to spikeball vs smash ball, smash ball is cheaper, but less durable, has worse gameplay and isn’t as easy to use.
Smash ball is exactly the same as the other spikeball variants/spikeball knock-offs.
The overall quality is lower, but it is a quite a bit cheaper than the spikeball set.
Rating the various spikeball sets.
For convenience, I have made a quick rating in terms of what spikeball-like sets are best.
- Spikeball pro
- Slammo pro with spikeball pro balls
- Spikeball regular
- Slammo pro
- Slammo, slam ball, smash ball
- Spyderball
Conclusion
Spikeball is a great game, but it can be slightly too expensive for some people out there. If you want to save some money, there are plenty of knock-offs to choose from. However, when we take a closer look it turns out that all these knock-offs are actually identical, but with different branding (logo, color, etc.).
There is also a clear difference between in quality and durability, so if you intend to play this game often and in a serious way, it’s highly recommended to still buy the more expensive official spikeball pro set.
Slammo pro is the only exception, this is actually a high quality knock-off. Sadly, this is also the more expensive knock-off and the default balls aren’t that great so you should also invest in spikeball pro balls.
If you go with any of the other knock-offs, I would recommend to simply go with the cheapest option that you can find, as the quality will be identical.
